Merger Vote in Historic Year

As we look ahead to the coming year, one thing is clear: 2005 promises to be a very significant one for the accountancy profession.

The year represents an important milestone, marking as it does the 125th anniversary of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

It was on March 24, 1880, that the ICAEW received its Royal Charter. Today it is the largest professional accountancy body in Europe, with over 126,000 members ( including some 3,000 in the North-East and Cumbria.

But there is another major reason why 2005 could arguably become the most ground-breaking year for the profession since that momentous day in the late 19th Century.

In the coming months, chartered accountants in this region, along with those in the rest of the country ( and indeed, around the world ( could have a truly historic decision to make: whether to bring together three leading UK accountancy bodies to create a single, powerful voice for the profession. …
