Shear Agony on Sidelines Says Skipper

Alan Shearer admitted today that his 11-match absence from the Newcastle United side is "killing him."

But the United skipper added that he hoped to be back "sooner rather than later."

Shearer has been out of action since he damaged his thigh muscle in training in the middle of November ( and just when he was due to come back against Birmingham City last Saturday he picked up a calf injury.

As a result, he is refusing to set any date on his return, but after United's powder-puff efforts in the goalless draw with West Brom at The Hawthorns on Monday night, the sooner Graeme Souness has his skipper back the better.

Shearer (pictured) said today: "Things are going fine now but it is killing me not being able to play, and the fact that I have not been able to return is not for the want of trying.

"I cannot say how frustrated and disappointed I was to have to pull out of the squad for Saturday's game with Birmingham and to tell the truth I found it all a bit embarrassing. …
