A quick glance at the programme of events at the Sage Gateshead shows an emphasis on getting the whole community involved with a hands-on, informal approach to music.

A range of workshops starts this week to introduce just some of what's on offer at the newly opened international home for music on Gateshead Quays.

A Festival of Finding Out runs until this Friday and again from Monday until January 14 and boasts an array of workshops.

The World in Gateshead is for under sevens and their carers, in which those taking part can join in with music, song, stories and dances from around the world, led by an Early Years team.

Sticks and Skin, for seven to 12-year-olds, differs slightly each day and is divided into two sessions. Stick rhythms, hand rhythms, shakers, scrapers and bells ( you can try your hand at all kinds of drums and percussion with the tutors.

Voice Box is also for seven to 12-year-olds, in which you can sing, rap or write. …
