Seminoles Must Make Their Points

Florida State (8-3) needs to end the season on a positive note today. Few would have predicted a Seminole team with so much talent to be one of Bobby Bowden's biggest underachievers. The Noles face a West Virginia team that is the No. 7 rushing offense in the nation, averaging 254 yards per game. The Noles lead the nation in rush defense, allowing only 69 yards per game.

As usual the big question is, if the defense can stop West Virginia, can the FSU offense muster enough points to win with senior quarterback Chris Rix?

MEMORY LANE: Bowden faces his old team, West Virginia, where he was an assistant and head coach for 10 years. One of his best memories came in 1969, when Bowden, offensive coordinator at the time, changed West Virginia to a wishbone attack and beat ACC champ South Carolina 14-3.

EVANS LOOKING AROUND: Some high school recruits such as defensive back Bryan Evans of Ed White High have really been thrown a curve by recent coaching changes. Evans, selected to the USA Today High School All-America team, was considered a lock to sign with Florida until Ron Zook and assistant coach Dan Disch, formerly of Ed White, both went to Illinois. Then Evans took an interest in LSU, but coach Nick Saban decided to go to the Miami Dolphins. All the changes have helped FSU. Evans said he always wanted to play for Bowden. He is also looking at Georgia and Tennessee.

LOSE SOME, GAIN SOME: Granted, some recruits lost interest in Florida when Zook left, but the presence of Urban Meyer has opened doors to several prospects not previously looking at the Gators. One of those is DeSean Jackson from Cal Poly High in California. Jackson, who is leaning toward Cal or Southern California, visits Gainesville in mid-January. He is the No. 3 high school receiver in the nation, according to Rivals. …
