Colours are again coming into the home this season and one of the most popular and appealing tones for 2005 has to be blue.

As with your favourite pair of jeans, blue goes with everything. Blue has a tranquil and emotive quality that possibly descends from it being the colour associated with sea and sky ( though neither is truly blue.

From the deepest midnight to the palest sky, blue seems to be a colour linked with strong feelings of relaxation. When we look at the night sky or watch the waves break on a sea wall, we feel a strong sense of calm, even though the latter is nature at its most fearsome. Blue's peaceful qualities are most prevalent when associated with water.

To introduce blue into your home you will need to consider the furniture you have to go alongside your new colour scheme. Certain woods and finishes do not work well with all blues. A perfect combination, though, is a pastel blue teamed with antique pine painted white which looks even better when enhanced with a weather effect. This combination works well in a bathroom and gives the feeling of a nice relaxing sun-soaked holiday ( something I'm sure we could all do with.

Electric blue is big news on the catwalk and, of course, it has translated into the home. The colour lends itself to several rooms, one of which being the lounge area where you have enough space to experiment with this dazzling shade. The use of electric blue is very bold and is best put to use in an opulent surrounding. Team with sultry damson and plum tones for a look that would befit a movie star. Add extra grandeur to the look by using dramatic fabrics such as velvet, fake fur and panels of flock wallpaper.

Turquoise is also rearing its vibrant head and by offsetting it with gold you can create a room that's very retro but also very chic. …
