A Teesside doctor is preparing to make an emotional journey to her home city that was tragically wiped out in the tsunami disaster.

Many of Dr Nandi Wignarajah's friends and neighbours perished when the massive wave struck the city of Galle in Sri Lanka during the Boxing Day catastrophe.

Her parents' house in a nearby village was one of few to survive the tsunami and has been turned into a camp for survivors in the stricken area.

Now the specialist from the University Hospital of North Tees will use her expertise when she makes the trip home with fellow anaesthetist Dr Swarna Gooneratne, also from the country, later this month.

"We want to go and assess the situation and help with the medical treatment," she said.

"Some of these areas have not received much aid and there could still be a lot of new people who are affected and homeless."
