Police were today awaiting results of DNA tests on the body of a soldier suspected of murdering student Sally Geeson.

Lance Corporal David Atkinson, 31, was found dead after he set himself on fire and jumped from a seventh-storey hotel window.

Detectives investigating the death of Miss Geeson, 22, said he had been wanted for questioning.

It is understood the Army contacted police after Atkinson was declared absent without leave when he failed to return to Waterbeach barracks, near Cambridge, on January 4.

Miss Geeson disappeared after celebrating the start of 2005 in The Avery pub in Regent Street, Cambridge.

Her body was identified by her father Laurence, 51, on Saturday after it had been discovered in woodland, three miles from the centre of Cambridge.

The results of the DNA tests on Atkinson's body may link the soldier to the murder.

Detective Superintendent Garry Swain, leading the murder investigation, said last night: "The inquiry remains active and we are continuing to assess all the evidence we have gathered. …
