Newcastle United could finish seventh in the Premiership this season ( and still qualify for Europe.

Last season the Magpies and Aston Villa ended up fighting it out for the only UEFA Cup spot being awarded through the league, with United taking fifth place on the last day of the season thanks to their superior goal difference.

But this season two more teams could qualify for the UEFA Cup through the Premiership.

Newcastle currently lie 14th in the league and 17 points adrift of Everton in fourth, the final Champions League place.

But while a return to the Champions League is now beyond United, they are just seven points off what could be the final European spot if both domestic competitions were won by teams that have already qualified for Europe.

The Football League have confirmed that only the winners of next month's Carling Cup final will be given a UEFA Cup berth, and if the team has already qualified, the place will go to the next highest club. …
