Jean Alain Boumsong cannot wait to make his Premiership debut for Newcastle United in front of a 52,000 full house at St James' Park on Saturday, (writes Alan Oliver).

The French international got his first run-out in a black-and-white shirt in last weekend's FA Cup victory over Yeading at Loftus Road following his pounds 8m switch from Rangers.

But it was completely different to what Boumsong can expect from the Saints in a couple of days' time.

Before today's training session, Boumsong said: "I am looking forward to playing in front of a full stadium at the weekend, but the Southampton game is one we need to win because we are in the middle of the table right now.

"I want to do well for the supporters. I was amazed at how many of them were at Sunday's game. To see so many gave me a really big boost.

"It wasn't easy against Yeading but we knew what we had to do as a team, and we did that.

"We wanted to get through to the next round of the FA Cup, we got the right result and now we look forward. …
