Post Must Deliver a Better Service

Article excerpt

The postal service in North Tyneside is going downhill fast.

I am sure the figures will show mail is generally delivered but statistics can hide a lot of things. They must include no answer as a successful delivery, as this happens to quite a lot of people. Does the postman knock and then post the card to say you were not at home? Time was when they would try a neighbour but perhaps this would add to the time they are allowed to deliver so it doesn't occur. This happened to me recently and I was at the door in reasonable time but he was gone. All that remained of him was the card and the usual elastic bands thrown away on the path. I guess they don't have time to pick them up now.

Then I began the painful process of calling the delivery office to rearrange delivery. The number was engaged for ages and when I did get through, after a long wait, a message kept telling me memory full so I could not leave any requests. I imagine its full of messages from other poor souls in the same boat as me. I gave up after two days of calling.

So I had to take the long journey to Shiremoor to pick up my parcel. It seems that to save money, they have drastically reduced the times they are open, so you have to be there early. The queue told me I wasn't the only one to suffer at the hands of the Puny Express!

The post office now seems great at posting junk mail (earning them money), speeding up the service (shorter times to deliver) and saving money (closures, less staff and poorer service). They will claim that they are reaching their targets. Seems like we are the targets and are being shot at in many ways.

I dread ordering mail-order because of the possible hassle I may have to obtain the item. I don't blame the postman as I'm sure they are pressurised these days to get things done faster, but something should be done to improve this failing service. …
