Callahan School Gains a Principal; Howard Says She Will Bring Passion to Her Job

CALLAHAN -- The green rubber plant in Susan Howard's office symbolizes her new position as principal at Callahan Elementary School -- strong, yet flexible.

Howard took over the principal position at Callahan after the death of Carolyn Parks-Flowers, who was principal at Callahan Elementary for more than 20 years.

Howard has been teaching in Nassau County for 28 years. She first taught at West Nassau High School before moving to Fernandina Beach to teach. After a one-year stint as vice principal at Yulee, Howard accepted the position at Callahan Elementary.

"I absolutely love what I do," Howard said. "I love the excitement that I have when I see the students. We have such an awesome responsibility to teach these children."

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Howard moved to Nassau County in 1975 and began teaching immediately. Howard said that being around children and teaching them life skills has always be her passion. …
