After 15 years of various diets, one mum-of-three is now finally back in control. Louise Redvers reports

It's not easy sticking to a diet and Barbara Finnie should know, she's spent nearly 15 years battling with her weight.

But the mum-of-three has finally claimed victory and is now a svelte size 12 and running her own slimming class.

Barbara's problems began, like many women, after she had children.

The 37-year-old said: "When I was 16, I had a lovely figure, and I was seven and a half stone.

"But after I had Daniel, who's now 14, I stopped work because I was exhausted also having Charlotte two years before.

"It was then that everything started to go a bit pear-shaped, well more like round-shaped I should say!

"I started having bars of chocolate every night and bags of crisps and I just ballooned.

"Being bigger really affected my confidence and I felt ugly and horrible and lacked any self-esteem."

Barbara signed up to a local slimming club in a bid to shift the pounds, but didn't get on with the diet and gave up soon afterwards.

It was then she went to her GP for help and came home with a pack of prescription slimming pills.

"The weight just dropped off me and I was full of energy," she explained, "Able to keep going for ages, my house had never been so clean.

"And I went from a size 18 to a size 12 in three months, but I also got quite unwell.

"I had a string of kidney infections and I got these terrible shakes and mood swings.

"I was very naive at the time and I never connected the slimming tablets to how I was feeling, but later on I found out they had contained amphetamine, and the shakes and moods were my body craving more of the drug.

"The pills have been removed from prescription now which is a good thing because what I went through was horrendous, especially the mood swings and irritation, I was like a real Jekyll and Hyde. …
