Hill Farmers Set for Opportunity to Quiz Senior Defra Officials

Farmers in the North Pennine Severely Disadvantaged Area have been offered a unique opportunity to quiz two of Defra's most senior representatives on changes to the Hill Farm Allowance due to be introduced on January 1, 2007.

Alan Taylor, head of Uplands, Forestry and Soil at Defra, is speaking at a meeting organised by the National Beef Association at the Function Room at Hexham Market, in Northumberland at on Thursday January 27 (6.30pm), and Defra's land use director, Jane Brown, will also be present.

"SDA farmers have been hit with a succession of difficult challenges and this important meeting will give anyone who wants to attend a chance to put questions on issues that will affect their future straight to the government officials most directly involved," explained Duff Burrell, vice-chairman of the NBA's Northern Council.

"Mr Taylor will speak to the meeting for just 30 to 40 minutes on Defra's new approach to hill land management and ideas for changes in the hill support system and has agreed to take questions from farmers, with help from Ms Brown, for an hour and a half. …
