Gang used knife in ambush

A robbery gang slashed a man across the face with a knife in a street ambush and stole his cash.

The 49-year-old victim needed 16 stitches to a gash above his right eye and 10 stitches to a wound under his chin. He also had around pounds 80 stolen in the attack.

Detectives say the man was powerless to defend himself from the ruthless attackers and they appealed for anyone who may have information about them to contact them.

The man, a plumber, whom police are not identifying, was pounced on from behind in Broomy Hill Road, Throckley, Newcastle, on Friday night.

Det Insp Terry McNamara of Newcastle CID said: "The victim was approached from behind at around 9pm.

"One of the robbers pushed him to the ground and he was grabbed by the hair and his head was pulled back.

"A knife was put under his chin and he was threatened, while a second man rifled through his pockets.

"There was another man involved at the scene as well. …
