Jacksonville unveiled Wednesday the long-awaited plans for the downtown SuperFest, a major entertainment extravaganza planned around the Super Bowl that will feature 21 music acts.

Sponsored by The Florida Times-Union, it will feature many entertainment and food and beverage options throughout the Northbank and Southbank from Thursday, Feb. 3, through Feb. 6. There is no cost for admission to the four-day event.

SuperFest concerts will feature a wide variety of artists, including Southern rockers .38 Special, R&B vocal group Boyz II Men, '80s pop rockers Huey Lewis & The News and local swamp-funk outfit Mofro.

"Knowing [Super Bowl] tickets are so hard to come by, to have an event that can really celebrate the river and have free entertainment for everyone to come down to enjoy is a special situation," said Michael Kelly, president of the Jacksonville Super Bowl Host Committee.

Concerts downtown will begin on Jan. 31, when the country duo Montgomery Gentry performs at the official Super Bowl XXXIX kickoff event at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. The show is sponsored by the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce. Tickets are on sale now and are available through Ticketmaster or at www.myjaxchamber.com/superbowl.

Meanwhile, the National Football League also announced its musical acts for a portion of the Pepsi Smash Super Bowl Concert Series.

A cadre of country stars are set to perform at the arena, including Dwight Yoakam, Jo Dee Messina, Chris Cagle and Josh Gracin, according to NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy. Those four will perform Friday, Feb. 4. Tickets are $39, $50, $60 and $350 for a VIP package that includes food.

Another show is planned for Thursday, Feb. 3, but a lineup has not been announced. …
