Virus-Hit Tierney Misses Cup Clash

Carlisle will be without Marc Tierney when they put their Conference Cup ambitions to the test at Runcorn this evening after the defender was struck down with a virus which Paul Simpson feared could have a devastating effect on his squad.

But the Cumbrians' boss is confident of fielding a strong side at the Halton Stadium, having seen last weekend's league fixture at Leigh RMI postponed as the result of a frozen pitch.

Tierney has played a key role in recent weeks but having been sent home from training to prevent the risk of passing on his illness to his team-mates, is now facing a spell on the sidelines.

"He clearly wasn't well and there was no way he could train so we sent him home," explained Simpson. "Hopefully he will feel a lot better after a couple of days' rest and we will just have to do without him. …
