New ways to discourage motorists from speeding are being tested. The Northumbria Safety Camera Partnership is looking to put electronic signs next to speed cameras clocking up fines for drivers who go on ignoring them

Speed cameras ignored by hundreds of drivers are to set be flashed up on hi-tech warning signs.

The Northumbria Safety Camera Partnership is trying out the technology in a bid to cut the number of motorists breaking the limit.

They say some cameras are not having a big enough effect on traffic on the region's roads.

The scheme, using state-of-the-art electronic signs, will be tested next to a fixed camera on the A167 Durham Road, near the Angel of the North, in Gateshead.

If successful, it would be extended to other locations. At some sites, cameras have failed to have a big impact despite being there for more than 10 years.

Ray King, of the Partnership, said: "We regularly monitor both speeds and collisions at all camera sites and are aware some cameras appear to be having more of an effect on driver behaviour than others. …
