LONDON BRIDGE TO MANSION HOUSE Bus: 15 minutes Walking: 13 minutes Steps: 2,235 Calories burned: 112

I just manage to squeeze into a bus leaving London Bridge - so my chances of getting a seat are nil. I cling on to an overhead pull, no mean feat when you're only 5 ft 1in.

When I walk the same route, I join thousands of fellow rushhour commuters across London Bridge, taking in the terrific views and enjoying the fresh air - and I even bump into an old schoolfriend I haven't seen for 10 years. I find myself easily outpacing the line of congested buses and cars.

VICTORIA STATION TO HARRODS Tube: 24 minutes Walking: 21 minutes Steps: 2,814 Calories burned: 140

Before I even reach the turnstile at Victoria station, an irate commuter barges past, treading on my foot and casting me a disgusted look for daring to get in her way. I manage to squeeze on to the Tube train - no chance of a seat - for an uncomfortably stuffy journey.

When I walk the route, everyone seems in a better mood. Having burned off an impressive 140 calories, I reward myself with a breakfast bagel.

WATERLOO STATION TO MIDDLE TEMPLE Tube: 18 minutes Walking: 14 minutes Steps: 1,678 Calories burned: 84

Waterloo to Temple is just two stops, but there is no time to read, and little point scrambling for a seat.

When I walk, there's a chill wind blowing but the light is beautiful, showing off the landmarks of London's finest view: Parliament, the Eye, the National Theatre, St Paul's Cathedral, the Gherkin and Canary Wharf. I arrive at Temple refreshed and alert.

PADDINGTON TO MARBLE ARCH Tube: 23 minutes Walking: 20 minutes Steps: 2,156 Calories burned: 108

On the Tube, I was nearly cut off at the ankles by a tourist dragging one of those perishing wheeled suitcases. Then, I had to force my way on to the train with more aggression than I care to use at 8am.

Walking through interesting back streets was a pleasure compared with strap-hanging under some guy's armpit. My route from Paddington station took in Connaught Street with its private art galleries, antique shops and Jimmy Choo's boutique. I also discovered a fabulous independent coffee and tea merchant.

KING'S CROSS TO GREAT ORMOND STREET HOSPITAL Tube: 19 minutes Walking: 18 minutes Steps: 2,184 Calories burned: 109

It might have been pouring down outside, but on the Tube from King's Cross things were rather warm and frankly a bit smelly.

The walk back, despite the drizzle, was far more pleasant. The streets were quiet as I wound my way through parks hidden between the office blocks and shops.
