A jobs boom at Newcastle bank Northern Rock is set to bring more than 900 jobs to the North East this year after announcing record profits today.

The bank has reconfirmed its loyalty to the region with hundreds more jobs set for 2006.

Northern Rock said it will create the 900 roles at its headquarters at Gosforth's Regent Centre and its contact centre at Doxford Park, in Sunderland, this year.

If plans to knock down its landmark tower block in Gosforth are given the go-ahead it will also create more than 1,500 new jobs there in the future.

Chief operating officer at the bank, David Baker, said: "It is fantastic. For us as a North East company it is tremendous to be able to create jobs. It (the North East) is still a very good place to do our business from, in terms of the quality of staff we get.

"We complete phase four of our expansion in April this year. That means 1,400 new workstations.

"We have plans to knock down the tower block and replace that. …
