It emerged today the joys of fatherhood were the main reason for the "sudden" resignation of the founding chairman of Tees Valley Regeneration.

Peter Middleton's decision to quit the urban regeneration company last week surprised the region's business community.

But today he said: "I have a small family - six-month-old twins Theo and Jorja as well as five-and-a-half-year-old Harry - and need to give my wife Anita more support."

Mr Middleton, 64, who has attended most regular board meetings - plus frequent trips from his London home - since the organisation's inception in 2002, said he was also stepping down as the TVR post would soon be taking up even more time.

He also believes in the job rotating.

TVR is driving projects including Middlehaven and North Shore at Stockton.

"With projects now getting into a more detailed phase, the chair will have to spend more time in meetings and be there to support the executives," he said. …
