We Will Not Be the Poor Relations!

County Durham will be left as the North-East's "poor relation" if a regional masterplan goes through, council chiefs warned last night.

Durham County Council says the regional spatial strategy, drawn up the North-East Assembly, will bolster urban areas while leaving counties behind.

The document, which will lay the guidelines to which all planning policies would have to conform until 2021, is going through a consultation stage.

And council leader Ken Manton said his authority is angry at planned housing allocations which would limit the county to just 5pc of a projected 37,000 population growth in the region in the next 17 years.

Coun Manton said: "In seeking to promote and support a level of economic growth that will reduce disparity between the North-East and other regions, it concentrates too heavily and in too many respects on promoting growth, development and jobs provision within the major conurbations, like Tyne and Wear and the Tees Valley, at the expense of other parts. …
