There is, quite obviously, a real problem in predicting what lies anything up to 25 years in the future.

The simple fact is that no-one, even with the best data available ( and one assumes that the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and English Regions Network have access to such information ( knows what the future holds.

Which is just as well for optimists in the North-East.

According to this detailed study, to be released next week, the region faces another 25 years of industrial and social decline, a widening North-South economic gap and a shrinking population.

All of which is rather depressing for those of us who live in the North-East, believe in it and can see the potential of the region.

That information tells its own story and it is such statistics that sparked The Journal's Case for the North campaign, which set out to highlight the inequalities which beset the region and to point to solutions.

We have a long way to go on the solution front, if this new report is anything to go by, but ( given that the Government is heavily involved in commissioning this piece of work ( we hope it will mark a turning point. …
