Fears were last night growing for a missing nine-year-old boy.

Ben Wilson went out to play early on Saturday and was reported missing by his father when he failed to return to his home in Witham, Essex, around 12 hours later. Police believe he was seen by a neighbour near his home at around 2pm on Saturday but they say that since then there have been no confirmed sightings.

Fiscal target

CHANCELLOR Gordon Brown's spending plans were under fresh scrutiny after a research group gave him a 20pc chance of meeting his key fiscal target.

The National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) said Mr Brown's rule of borrowing only to invest looked unlikely over the current economic cycle, which the Treasury expects will end in the 2005/06 financial year.

It forecast economic growth at a robust 2.7pc in 2005, but still down on the 3pc to 3.5pc predicted in the Chancellor's December pre-Budget report.
