A Teesside mp today demanded to know "why the hell" giant US corporation Halliburton was allowed to become involved in the Royal Navy aircraft carrier contract.

Veteran Labour member Frank Cook criticised the appointment of the firm's subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root as "physical integrator" the pounds 2.9bn naval contract.

The blast came after UK firm BAE Systems, which is leading an alliance of firms with French firm Thales to build the ships, reportedly threatened to pull out of the project after the Ministry of Defence's decision. The row could have a knock-on effect on North-east shipbuilder Swan Hunter which is set to create 3,000 jobs at its Teesside and Tyneside yards when construction starts in 2008.

Mr Cook's Stockton North constituency is set to benefit from the contract as some work will be carried out at Swan Hunter's Port Clarence yard. He said if the reports were true then he was deeply concerned. …
