Plans to build hundreds of homes next to a scrapyard in central Stockton have sparked health and road safety concerns.

Persimmon Homes is proposing to build 80 houses and 166 flats on Parkfield Road close to several businesses and roads.

Ted Frater, owner of nearby Parkfield Motors, believes the development will become a safety hazard for youngsters crossing the main roads to get to school.

The design comprises three four-storey terraces of apartments located between Bowesfield Lane and the new South Stockton Link Road.

"They have made no provision for pavements or traffic safety measures for the children who will live there and need to walk to school," said Mr Frater.

"I would like to see the houses go ahead but I don't think this is a decent design and they haven't addressed the road safety issues.

"What I don't want is people coming here to use the phone because a child has been knocked over. …
