It's great news that Park Lane Infant School has been heralded as one of the top performers in the country.

Our congratulations go out to everyone involved in winning such a superb Ofsted accolade. And to all those other successful schools on Teesside.

Such glowing reports are testaments to the staff, the teaching environment and practices, and the pupils. And they will be warmly welcomed by every parent.

How ironic then that Park Lane is under threat of the axe as part of amalgamation plans in Guisborough.

Sadly one of its factors for success ( children being taught in smaller classes ( is also one of the main reasons for the school's very existence to come under scrutiny.

Of course there are sound economic, if not educational, reasons for looking at schools with falling rolls. By reducing surplus places at one school money can be freed to be spent on needs elsewhere.

But with the spotlight of excellence shining on Park Lane today the point needs to be underlined that there is a balance to be found between resources and results. …
