Bees Too Strong for Tired Vipers

The champions-elect proved too strong for a 10-skater Vipers team which, as expected, tired the longer this dress rehearsal for the forthcoming two-legged Winter Cup Final went on.

Winger Rob Trumbley was one of four forwards missing from the Vipers line-up as he was starting a three-match ban imposed as he had picked up a travesty of the game match penalty in Sunday's away defeat against the Hull Stingrays.

Two other players who put the steel into the team, wingers Paul Ferone and Michael Tasker along with Stephen Wallace were also out leaving the Vipers with only two lines of forwards.

The Vipers killed one penalty but failed to keep the Bees at bay when they were a man short for a second time. With Hilton Ruggles in the penalty box for interfering Greg Owen successfully redirected debutant Jan Krulis's slapshot into the net on 16 minutes.

Just over a minute later the Vipers spurned a good chance for the equaliser during a two-on-one breakaway with David Longstaff choosing to shoot rather than attempt to set up Jonathan Weaver. …
