Monty Moves to Nine under in Melbourne; IN SHORT
COLIN MONTGOMERIE carded a flawless second round 65 to claim a share of the clubhouse lead in the Heineken Classic at Royal Melbourne today.
Montgomerie (above), second last week at the Caltex Masters title in Singapore, collected six birdies and did not drop a single shot for a nine-underpar halfway total of 133.
That was later matched by Peter Lonard, whose Australian compatriot 23-year-old rookie Jarrod Lyle was also nine under with seven holes to play.
Overnight joint-leader Trevor Immelman was fourth after adding a 69 to his opening 65.
Ernie Els was also back in contention after what he described as a "grinding" 64.
The South African ended the day three shots off the lead as he stepped up his bid for a record-equalling fourth straight victory in the event.
Nick Faldo birdied the last for a 66, but missed the cut.
