The girlfriend of a Middlesbrough man stabbed at the weekend told today how she feared she would lose him.

Dad-of-one Andrew Withers was knifed in the shoulder blade in the horrific attack at Pallister Park on Saturday.

He is still in hospital today, where his condition is described as "poorly but stable".

Police say the 23-year-old was stabbed on the grassed area on Homerton Road near the Middlebeck Social Club at about 7.20am.

Michelle Freeman, who is Andrew's partner and the mother of their two-and-a-half-year-old son Jordan, told the Gazette: "We are very lucky to still have him here.

"If it hadn't been for his health and his physique, he would have died. The muscle in his shoulder blade saved him.

"He was critical at one point and I just don't know what we would have done if he had died."

Andrew, a plasterer, had left a party on Epworth Road and walked around the corner when the assault occurred.

Michelle, 22, praised the actions of a passing taxi driver and Andrew's friends, who came to his aid after they saw the stabbing. …
