Last Straw Sees Post Chief Shut Up Shop

Villagers are fighting to keep their post office after the postmaster shut up shop and left.

Allendale Post Office was still boarded up yesterday and a spokesperson for Royal Mail was unable to say when it would re-open or when a replacement postmaster would be found.

At 4.20am on Sunday, police received a report of youths throwing objects at a motor vehicle, believed to belong to postmaster Paul Atkinson, near the store.

Two teenagers were arrested but one was released without charge and the other on police bail. No damage was caused to the vehicle.

But within hours Mr Atkinson, his wife and two children, had left, one worker saying she thought he had had enough.

She said: "They left in a bit of a hurry. There was trouble in the night and they were fed up, I don't think they could take any more."

Bill Purdue, Northumberland County councillor for South Tynedale, said: "There's been a long-standing argument between the owner of the post office and the youths that tend to gather in the bus shelter opposite and that boiled over in the early hours of Sunday morning. …
