Old U.S. 1 Welcome Center to Be Razed

BOULOGNE -- Nassau County residents can say good-bye to the old Welcome Center just south of the Georgia state line.

County commissioners have decided to seek bids to demolish the center on U.S. 1. The building, which has been vacant since 1972, has been deemed unsafe by Nassau County building official Whitey Moran.

"My main concern is life, safety, health and welfare," Moran said. "The building is destroyed. The windows are blown out and the inside has been torn up by vandals."

Dean Woehrle, a board director for St. Marys River Management Committee, wants to put a forestry and river educational museum at the site. It also could be used as a community center, he said.

Woehrle has been trying to raise money for the museum for three years, but has been unable to get funding.

Moran said he met with Woehrle last month to tell him that if he didn't have money for repairs to the existing building, the county would have to destroy it. …
