Max

Sky Movies 1, 8pm (2002)

Writer-director Menno Meyjes's character study examines the relationship between Adolf Hitler and a fictional art dealer in the years following the First World War, before the Fuhrer's rise to power.

Jewish dealer Max Rothman (John Cusack) lost his arm fighting in the German army and returns to Munich to open an art gallery in one of the city's abandoned factories. At this time, Max meets the young Adolf (Noah Taylor on fine form), who hopes to develop his talent for art. While the eponymous character believes that Hitler shows great promise, the would-be artist loses interest in the canvas, and diverts his attention to politics.

This controversial art house offering left many critics divided upon release in the summer of 2003. However, Cusack is excellent as the fictional character inspired by people encountered by Hitler.
