Soldier denies attacking Iraqis

A North East soldier accused of abusing Iraqis said photographs of the alleged incidents were just posed.

Corporal Daniel Kenyon said the picture of his colleague Lance Corporal Mark Cooley, looking as though he was about to punch a bound detainee, was "absolutely nothing".

"He's just posing for a picture and that's it," Kenyon, 33, from North-umberland, told a court martial in Osnabruck, Germany, yesterday.

He said it was like pulling a funny face behind a person's back when they are having their photo taken.

Admitting he had tied up and blindfolded the man, he added: "We were just coming out of a war scenario, everybody was a bit wound-up and people were trying to come down."

Father-of-two Kenyon faces five separate charges of abuse. An allegation of aiding and abetting a third soldier, Lance Corporal Darren Larkin, to make men strip, was dropped last week.

Former Walbottle Campus pupil Cooley, 25, of Throckley, Newcastle, was also cleared of one charge of simulating a kick to a prisoner. …
