Newcastle Diamonds are extending a helping hand to their one-time fierce rivals as a band of enthusiasts attempt to bring speedway back to Middlesbrough.

Diamonds co-promoter George English revealed that a Middlesbrough Bears team will feature regularly in challenge matches at Brough Park this year following evening Premier League contests.

Diamonds' rising star Byron Bekker stands to benefit most from the agreement as, in addition to riding for a Newcastle foursome, the South African will also turn out for the four-man Bears team on occasions in order to further his experience.

English said: "Since Cleveland Park closed down at the end of 1996, there have been several attempts to revive the sport on Teesside but, unfortunately, it hasn't happened yet.

"With us pulling out of the Conference League this year, we have been looking for ways to give the fans a full 21-heat programme for their money, so, after being approached by the Bears, we have offered them 10 second-half dates at Byker. …
