Boston-Area Companies to Watch Closely

A dozen Boston-area companies made the Fortune 500 list last year, based on revenues, and it's likely that their chief executives will be focused Sunday on Super Bowl XXXIX as the New England Patriots compete at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville.

One spokesman confirmed that some of his company's executives will attend the game, but it's not clear how many other corporate decisionmakers might come to town.

Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce and city leaders consider the Super Bowl a prime time to showcase the area to visiting or viewing executives who might want to expand or relocate operations.

Today we look at Fortune companies in the Boston area, home to the AFC champions. On Wednesday we'll look at companies in Philadelphia, home to the Eagles.

Most Fortune 500 companies in both cities fit within the city's targeted industries of aviation/aerospace; auto parts and accessories; distribution; financial services; headquarters; information technology; medical technology, products and services; and semiconductors and microelectronics.

The first to confirm Super Bowl attendance was No. 215 The Gillette Co., which is the title sponsor of Gillette Stadium, home of the Patriots. Spokesman Eric Kraus said members of Gillette's operating committee would attend the game.

Jacksonville leaders might want to make their acquaintance because No. 28 Procter & Gamble Co. and Gillette announced last week that P&G intends to buy Gillette for $57 billion. While Gillette sells its personal care products in Jacksonville, it has no area operations. Cincinnati-based P&G, which also makes consumer products, might be worth a conversation.

Raytheon Co., No. 107, is a defense electronics and aircraft company, one of the city's top targeted industries and its closest business unit is in Largo. …
