It's never easy organising an event for the first time.

No matter how much preparation you do, something is bound to go wrong.

Imagine then what it must be like for the people running The Sage Gateshead as Labour brought its first conference to Tyneside this weekend.

Not only have they had to deal with 3,000 delegates but they've also had party officialdom and police security.

Whenever the Prime Minister attends an event a dozen security officers will be by his side. Whenever the top tier of government is on the road, an entire police force will be called into action.

And that's what it felt like yesterday as Northumbria Police demonstrated their ability to put 1,000 officers on duty at once. (They claim to have developed a "range of contingency plans" to help them "deal with any eventuality". All, that is, except Fathers 4 Justice getting on to the Tyne Bridge.)

It was as people tried to get in during the morning rush hour that problems emerged. …
