Gateshead Thunder's revamped cosmopolitan side faces its first serious test when the 2005 rugby league season gets underway tomorrow.

Thunder travel to National League Two champions Barrow Raiders with nine off-season signings in their starting 13.

Barrow coach Peter Roe is expecting a tough game against a Gateshead side he knows very little about.

"We beat Gateshead four times last year," said Roe.

"But they still averaged 25 points against us and they beat Salford City Reds Under-21s in their pre-season so we can expect a few problems from them."

"They are a new team with ten overseas players, are a bit of a mystery side and an unknown quantity so we don't know what to expect."

Thunder's local products Kevin Neighbour and Robin Peers are the only survivors in a new-look back division which includes an Australian half-back and centre combination.

West Indies international Selwyn St. Bernard spearheads a pack that includes Gateshead's top two appearance holders ( Steven Bradley and Stephen Rutherford. …
