Liverpool have been mightily crafty over their skipper and talisman Steven Gerrard.

Chief executive Rick Parry didn't live up to his name and block the question on whether or not Liverpool could keep England's finest.

Liverpool, he revealed with great authority, would turn down a record pounds 50m bid for Gerrard.

That's it, then. Game over. Well, er, not exactly, because in the same interview Parry admitted that if Gerrard wanted to go they would be "powerless" to stop him.

In other words, Liverpool fans are presumably placated that the club isn't trying to cash in on their prize asset after taking gold from Real Madrid for Michael Owen and that if Scouser Gerrard does go, he'll be the instigator.

Of course, it's a re-run of last summer when Gerrard was off to Chelsea but at the last minute pulled the plug because Anfield supporters were calling him Judas and in some cases threatening bodily harm.

Steve stayed loyal but demanded that Liverpool had to show signs of real progress towards the silverware which he craves. …
