IT can't be easy being Al "AG" Lafley, 57, chief executive of Procter & Gamble, which is merging with Gillette. You want to talk about your plans for the new giant combine, they want to ask trivia. Still, you're the boss and you can't let the side down so all questions, however petty, must be answered. Lafley gave an interview to Fortune magazine, supposedly a serious business journal, about the Gillette deal.

After explaining how P&G struggled in beauty care but had turned it round, he is asked: "So you have a passion for beauty.

What's your own grooming regimen?" He replies: "I use Old Spice deodorant - not antiperspirant, because antiperspirants stain your clothes. I was using [SC Johnson's] Edge shaving cream, but I'll be switching to Gillette. I've always used a Gillette razor - the M3 Power. I use Head & Shoulders regularly and then Pantene Clarifying [shampoo] once a week. It just really cleans your hair. I work out every day, so I wash my hair virtually every day, even though you're not supposed to. For aftershave, I use SK-II [P&G's $130-abottle women's skincare product]. I use Olay hand cream and Olay body lotion.

I'm not much of a fragrance guy but I occasionally use Baldessarini, which is sort of an older-guy fragrance. It's more subtle. Oh, and I use Old Spice body wash." All except Edge are P&G products.

Genius.

BEING ethical all the time really is a bore. The Fairtrade scheme, no less, is coming under fire from the Transport and General Workers' Union for not promoting "union rights".While all the major coffee producers are unionised, Fairtrade producers Cafedirect, Clipper, Green & Black's and Day Chocolate are not unionised or do not have a recognition contract. Says the TGWU: "We certainly cannot promote fair trade when they don't use union labour - especially against companies that do recognise unions and engage in collective bargaining. …
