Members of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office are holding a community fund-raiser from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at St. Augustine High School at 3205 Varella Ave. in St. Augustine, to raise money to help pay medical expenses for 24-year-old Deputy Chris Dale.

Dale was diagnosed with Clarks Type II melanoma in April, and had surgery in July to remove the cancer, which remains in remission. But he needs continued chemotherapy treatment for another eight months, at a cost of $3,000 per month. Monetary donations can also be made by contacting county Victim Advocate Donna Hazel at 810-6648.


Children's activities abound at the Bartram Trail branch library at 60 Davis Pond Blvd. this month.

At 10 a.m. Friday, a Walt Disney film will be screened during the Children's Movie Day program.

The library and its teen advisory board host a Chinese New Year Family Event at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22.

Storytime occurs at 9:50, 10:40 and 11:30 a.m. each Wednesday for children up to age 3.

Preschool story time for ages 3 to 5 is at 9:50 and 10:40 a.m. Thursdays, while Siblings Storytime is at 1:30 a.m. Thursdays for parents who have children who fall into both age groups.


The St. Johns County School District holds registration for kindergartners and new students from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday and March 3, or Tuesday, April 12, at the school where they have been zoned for the 2005-06 school year.

To be eligible for public kindergarten, children must be 5 years old on or before Thursday, Sept. 1, and must reside in St. Johns County. To register for first grade, children must be 6 years old on or before Sept. 1, and have successfully completed kindergarten. The child's certified birth certificate and Social Security number are required at the time of registration, as well as proof of residence, certain immunizations and a physical examination. …
