Magistrates released an illegal immigrant back into the community just hours after he had been arrested with fake documents.

Algerian Hacene Lamani has been living in the North East for eight years.

This week a police operation saw him arrested and locked up after being caught with a counterfeit French ID card.

Lamani, who lives on Walker Road, Walker, Newcastle, with his Geordie wife, pleaded guilty to using a counterfeit identity card when he appeared before city JPs.

But, despite an ongoing investigation by the immigration service, he was freed on conditional bail.

A last-ditch appeal by the Crown Prosecution Service saw a judge at Newcastle Crown Court intervene and Lamani was eventually remanded in custody, pending sentence.

Glenn Blackwood, prosecuting, told Newcastle Magistrates' Court: "The main witness is the defendant's wife and when she met him he told her he was an Algerian citizen.

"After a few months he told her he was an illegal immigrant and that he had entered the UK using a French identity card and was able to obtain a British National Insurance number using the card. …
