The winter's first major snowfall left roads treacherous - but the area looking pretty as a picture.

In Middlesbrough town centre, some locals said yesterday's snow covering was the thickest seen for years.

Early morning drivers found conditions tricky on the roads, but all routes were passable.

But with an eye on this week's weather forecasts, police across the region were bracing themselves for worse to come.

A Cleveland Police spokesman said: "All roads were passable yesterday with care and no major accidents were reported."

North Yorkshire Police spokesman Sergeant Dave Brown also said all roads were passable, including the notorious Whitby to Guisborough A171 Moor Road, although it was badly hit.

He said: "There have been a few minor accidents, including one with minor injury in the Northallerton area.

"But the weather is very changeable and a lot more snow is forecast."

Meanwhile, people were getting out and about to make the most of the snow. …
