Around this time last year the motor world was eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Peugeot 407. Despite a certain amount of conjecture over its large oval grille, this exceptionally striking looking saloon has already made its mark in the marketplace, being voted the most secure family car by What Car? Magazine.

Along with the SW estate version launched last September it has met the carmaker's ambitious sales target, having graced more than 150,000 European driveways to date.

Although buyers have to wait until the first quarter of 2006 for the final piece of the 407 jigsaw, the CoupA, to slot into the equation, the saloon and SW have much to offer the mid-size family car buyer who yearns for distinctive styling in a transport of delight.

There are four petrol engine options and a brace of diesels, five and six-speed manual transmissions, four or six-speed automatic gearboxes and four trim levels, each of which provide a generous level of standard kit.

Prices kick in at pounds 14,995 for the 407 Saloon 1.8 117bhp S petrol model, rising through pounds 17,700 for the two-litre 136bhp HDi SE to pounds 22,500 for the flagship Executive three-litre V6 Automatic.

The 407 SW provides even more spacious family-style facilities with pricing opening up at pounds 16,095 for the 1.8 S entry level model, rising through pounds 18,800 for the two-litre 136bhp HDi SE and topping out at pounds 23,600 for the three-litre V6 Automatic range-topping version.

Peugeot's 307 range has continued to prove popular with buyers posting a 4pc rise during the past year.

It comes in three-door hatch, five-door hatch, estate and coupe convertible form while the Coventry carmaker is also offering three special editions, X-Line, Sport and Quicksilver, designed to suit all budgets from pounds 10,995.
