A 66th-minute goal by midfield inspiration Ieroklis Stoltidis steered Olympiacos into the last 16 of the Uefa Cup and a meeting with Newcastle United.

The Greek side settled both ties with solitary goals, but Sochaux had their chances in the second leg, especially in a keenly contested first half.

Sochaux, who were beaten on home territory by the Magpies in the competition's group stage, created the opening chance after nine minutes.

Jaouad Zairi crossed to the near post for Tunisia striker Francileudo Santos who got his right foot to the ball, but a Greek defender was able to clear.

Moroccan Zairi and Santos, fit again after shaking off a leg injury, linked again in the 15th minute but Olympiacos keeper Antonios Nikopolidis saw off the danger.

Olympiacos broke quickly in the 20th minute and a fine header by Yiannis Okkas, who scored the only goal in last week's first leg, brought a good save from Sochaux keeper Teddy Richert.

Nikopolidis was at his brilliant best in the 29th minute, diving at the feet of teenager Jeremy Menez. …
