A pounds 100,000 boost has been delivered for the plans to build a new skateboard park in Middlesbrough.

The SITA Environmental Trust is giving a pounds 100,000 grant towards the pounds 450,000 project to provide the skateboard park.

It is to be built at the Prissick Base and the "skate plaza" will replicate the streetscape favoured by skaters in towns and cities and allow them to practice tricks such as ollies, grinds and kick-flips.

Youngsters came up with the idea for the plaza after leaflets and questionnaires distributed by Middlesbrough Council asked them what facilities they wanted.

Paul Rabbitts, development manager at Middlesbrough Council, said: "We are delighted to receive this large amount of funding from SITA Environmental Trust.

"There is a clear need for this fantastic facility and now we are much closer to making it happen."

Barry Coppinger, Executive councillor for community safety and leisure, said: "The council has responded to demand from many young people in the area and we are committed to developing the potential of skateboarding in a safe, secure, and attractive environment. …
