My ten-year-old son has been troubled through most of the winter by nose bleeds.

It started with a heavy cold, but now his nose seems to bleed with only the slightest knock or even for no apparent reason at all.

I am a bit reluctant to seek surgery for this problem and wonder if there is an alternative.

This is not uncommon, particularly at this age.

The fine vessels inside the nose become fragile often as a result of inflammation caused by either infection or allergy.

One treatment, as you suggest, is cauterising the blood vessels likely to be the source of the bleeding, which can be a bit distressing.

An alternative may be to try to address potential causes with allergy treatment or the use of antiseptic nasal creams applied to the inflamed nasal tissue. Usually a couple of weeks of treatment will tell you if it is going to be successful.
