Family and friends gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday of popular care home resident Mary Riddle in style .

With cards decorating her room and her card from the Queen taking pride of place, Mary marked 100 years with relatives, including brother David, and staff and friends from her care home, Preston Towers, North Shields.

Born in North Shields on February 20, 1905, Mary was one of five girls and four boys.

She worked for many years as a shop assistant before going on to work as a cleaner at the courthouse in North Shields.

It was a position she held during the Second World War, while Jack worked in a local shipyard.

Brother David Campbell, a former shipwright from North Shields, said: "Even though there was a big age difference between us, Mary and I got along very well.

"She is a very well-liked person and we now go to visit her in the home every week, often with her two nieces and two nephews on my side of the family. …
