Chance to Have a Say on Pounds 2m Gardens Revamp

The designs of four shortlisted companies for the pounds 2m transformation of Sunniside Gardens in Sunderland will be unveiled today.

The quartet's ideas for turning the area into a public space will go on show at the Sunniside Partnership's offices at High Street West in the city.

Casella Stanger of Durham, Robinson Landscapes of Newcastle, Ian White Associates from Stirling, and Burrell Chaudhri of London, beat off stiff competition to make the shortlist.

Ian Wardle, Sunniside Partnership director, said: "The gardens are a unique opportunity to create a wonderful urban oasis right in the heart of Sunderland city centre. This potential haven will become a focus for people who want to relax and take time out from the city's hustle and bustle and it could also become a place for outdoor events such as concerts or street theatre.

"We are really enthusiastic about the designs which have been submitted and want as many people as possible to come along and give us their views on them. …
