David Whetstone looks at what this remarkable addition to the Gateshead Quayside has brought to the region.

There was some anxiety among existing venue managers about the big, bright newcomer in their midst, perhaps not helped by its logo ( Music Is Moving.

Music was moving into The Sage Gateshead but did that mean it was moving away from other places?

There's no evidence that this has happened. The move of the Northern Sinfonia into the new building and away from Newcastle City Hall could prove its saving grace, injecting new blood into an audience that was diminishing as it was ageing.

But the City Hall is still staging gigs, as are The Cluny in Byker, the Metro Radio Arena, Gateshead's Caedmon Hall, the King's Hall at Newcastle University, the students' union buildings and The Journal Tyne Theatre.

Whatever anxieties might have niggled, only the grumpiest could fail to be excited by a venue which adds so much to the cultural life of the region. …
