Man Caught with Pistol Jailed for Two Years

A father-of-five caught with a prohibited firearm has been jailed under anti-gun laws brought in after the Dunblane tragedy.

Police arrested Stephen Tweddle last August after a tip-off and recovered a .22 self-loading automatic pistol and 77 rounds of 9mm ammunition under the bed at his North Tyneside home. Tweddle, 52, claimed to have found the gun and ammunition some two years earlier in a picnic area while out walking, Newcastle Crown Court heard. "He says he came across the items in the bushes and took them to avoid anyone else being at risk," said Michael Graham, prosecuting. The court heard there was no magazine in the pistol and the ammunition found was not for use in that particular weapon.

Tweddle, of Percy Road, Whitley Bay, admitted possessing a prohibited weapon and ammunition without a certificate and was jailed for two years.

The offence carries an automatic five-year prison term unless exceptional circumstances can be proved. …
